Barrier Integrity Index
The Barrier Integrity Index is the analytical framework against which Hydra Chronic conducts its assessments.
It evaluates whether a formulation is physiologically coherent for compromised skin barriers – not whether it performs well in general, but whether its component logic holds under the specific conditions of barrier-impaired skin.
Assessments are conducted across four dimensions. Each dimension is evaluated independently against criteria derived from peer-reviewed dermatological and pharmaceutical literature. The result is a documented verdict.
The four dimensions:
Barrier architecture – whether the lipid matrix is structurally coherent with the lamellar requirements of compromised skin
Functional pH corridor – whether the formulation operates within the pH range that prevents serine protease overactivation in compromised barriers.
Membrane compatibility – whether the formulation is free of components that extract lipids, disrupt membrane integrity, or sensitise compromised barrier systems.
Delivery logic – whether active components are positioned to reach their intended site of action under barrier-compromised conditions.
The Signet
A formulation that meets the criteria across all four dimensions receives the Hydra Chronic Signet.
A formulation that demonstrates exceptional coherence – where the component architecture reflects active barrier support rather than passive compatibility – receives the Signet Distinction.
What does not meet the criteria receives no public statement.
